What size of diamonds in a 3 stone ring?

Krista asked:

I am getting a 3 stone diamond anniversary ring.
I want the centre stone to be .60 ct but how big should I get the side stones? I do want the centre stone to be bigger. Blue nile suggests .30ct each for the side stones but I wasnt sure if that was too small.

sounds good- if you aren’t sure I bet you could get a better idea if you go look at a jewelry store for an example of the sizes and what you like???

It just depends on how you want it to look. .30 would be exactly half of what the center stone is. You can easily picture that in your head how that would look. If it were me, I personally would want the side stones to be a little bigger; almost the same as the center stone but not quite. I would probably look for each to be around .45 (which is right in the middle of .30 and .60, if that makes sense)… or at least anywhere in between .40 and .50, if you have a range to choose from. (Anything above .50 you won’t be able to tell a difference between size of those and the center stone.)

The rule with center stones and side stones is that the diameter of the side stones should be approximately the same size as the table of the center stone. In rounds, table sizes are typically between 55% and 60% of the diameter. The diameter of a 0.60 is usually about 5.5 mm. SO the diameter of your side stones should be about 3.2mm. 3.2 mm diamonds are about 0.12 ct each. But this is more of the classic “side stone” look and not the “3 stone ring” look. The 3 stone look usually has larger side stones that aren’t totally dominated by the center stone. A typical 1 ct total weight 3 stone right will have a 1/2ct center with two 1/4ct sides. So you might want to match your 0.60 with heavy 1/4s (0.27/0.28), or even a light 1/3 (0.30/0.31ct).

Enjoy the gift!

Yes this combination of 30 ct each looks good but it’s up to you to do the final decision, in any case I would suggest reading this article for more info about perfect carat size when choosing diamond engagement ring.

In a Three Stone Diamond Ring the traditional center to side ratio is about 30% to 50% so if you center diamond is one carat sides could range fomr 0.30 to 0.50 on each side. Said that there is no rule written in stone about the size of the side stones compared ot the center. It all depends on the person’s taste, you have to decide what looks good to you not what the norm is.

For your center of 0.60 ct. which should be about 5.3 to 5.5mm depending on the cut, we suggest going with 0.20 to 0.30 on each side which should be 3.8mm to 4.3mm. This will give it a proportional look and the side diamonds won’t take the attention away from the center diamond.

That is a good size for the side diamonds. Keep in mind that the center stone is the most important one, that is the diamond that is going to pop when people first look at it. So you want to be sure that the side diamonds are about 1/2-1/3 the size of the center stone.
