Can I buy a diamond engagement ring for an anniversary?

JOhnny boy asked:

I want to purchase my girlfriend a diamond ring but its not an engagement ring. A ring just to commemorate our 1 year anniversery and I wasnt sure if buying a ring that is classified as “engagment” is ok? When I went to the jewelry store I found a ring I liked that had 3 stones 1 carat but it was classified as an engagement ring…. Is it still ok to Buy this ring? Thanks for any info. As you can tell im a guy and really have no clue about this type of thing

Why not go with a different stone? There are many pretty rings with stones other than diamonds. If you insist on diamonds, how about a diamond bracelet or earrings?

As long as you’re clear before she opens it that its only an anniversary gift it should be fine. You would still run the risk, however, of her assuming anyway that you’re thinking along the matrimonial lines. I think your best bet is to buy a ring that has a diamond as well as other precious stones (maybe here favorite color or her birth stone) so that its clearly not an engagement ring.

Here’s a couple examples:
(the one under “ideas for gifts”):

Three stone diamond rings are usually “past, present and future” so if you get here that, she might assume that its a big more than an anniversary gift.

these 3 stone rings really are known for wedding anniversary. I wouldn’t choose one of those. To avoid the whole ‘ring-dilemma’ why not choose a necklace or bracelet. With rings there is always the added problem to get the right size as well. A necklace would be perfect, particularly with romantic stones like Rose Quartz and Garnet,.
